Integration fast-tracks SuperSport.mobi and m.24.com to SA's top spots

Mobile content sites SuperSport.mobi and m.24.com rapidly increased their popularity among news- and sport-hungry South Africans during the festive season break leading them to claim the country's top two mobile destination spots in January 2010. This is according to Nielsen's Online Ranking Report which was released on 1 February, 2010.

Knocking previous mobile leader Soccer Laduma Mobile off the top spot for the second month in a row, SuperSport.mobi, which launched barely two months ago, recorded 355 250 unique browsers in January while m.24.com, ranked third place in December, increased its traction by 12% to secure the second spot with 196 684 unique browsers.

Mike Luscombe, CEO of South Africa's leading digital media sales company, The SpaceStation says, “The rapid growth in mobile traffic, particularly to SuperSport.mobi which is a relative newcomer in the mobile space, signals consumer's growing appetite for on-the-go content that can be accessed whenever, and wherever they are.”

The fact that both mobile sites are part of a bigger integrated network - SuperSport.mobi is aligned to its TV and website offering and m.24.com to South Africa's largest digital news destination, News24 - cannot be ignored and is largely responsible for their fast-tracked climb to securing the top two spots in the country.

“SuperSport.mobi's success provides just a glimpse of what is possible when TV and web channels are able to leverage and promote their mobile offering,” says Luscombe.

As content environments continue to attract larger user numbers and technologies evolve around targeting, profiling and enhanced creative, Luscombe suggests that the mobile advertising space will become a critical marketing platform.

“While mobile penetration in the South African market is significant, mobile advertising and its associated models, particularly in the content area, is still evolving. As such, with access to the two most popular mobile content properties in the country - SuperSport.mobi and m.24.com - this is an exciting time for The SpaceStation to be pushing mobile advertising boundaries,” concludes Luscombe.
