Inspired by the resilience of women
On 9 August 2022, we marked National Women's Day, and extend the commemoration campaign to boost awareness of and mobilisation against gender inequality and its consequences for the entire month. 9 August commemorates the march on Pretoria on this day in 1956 by some 20,000 women against the imposition of the pass laws on Black African women. The Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust's (CRET) alumni are giving back and paying it forward with an initiative of their own, supporting deserving students just like they were once supported. Now in established careers as a result of the bursary and development support they received from CRET, the alumni have established their own CRET Alumni Fund. They have contributed and leveraged funding to support three students in university already. Thari Programme spotlights bullying in schools this Child Protection Week
30 May to 6 June marks National Child Protection Week in South Africa. The week is commemorated annually to raise awareness of children's rights as articulated in the Constitution of South Africa and the Children's Act No. 38 of 2005. South Africa's Constitution emphasises the importance of children's rights, equality and dignity. Child Protection Week aims to raise awareness about children's rights as outlined in the Children's Act of 2005 and how South Africans can tackle the issues that infringe those rights. Return on investment for bursaries calls for holistic support
Many students are supported in their tertiary studies through bursaries provided by private companies. However, university retention and pass rates in South Africa are low. A recent Top Empowerment masterclass noted that 33% of students enrolled in a four-year degree will drop out. Less than a third of students manage to complete their tertiary education in the minimum allocated time. Holistic schools development mitigates Covid-19 impacts
The Covid-19 pandemic had a significant impact in 2020 on South Africa's schooling system. Schools had to be closed, from the end of March to June, and teaching and learning time was lost. Despite this and other impacts, the matric class of 2020 proved resilient, achieving a 76.2% pass rate. A 5.1% decline from the 2019 results, it was less severe than Adopt-a-School had anticipated. A study it had conducted in 20 high schools in which it works showed deep effects of the pandemic on learning and teaching. The matric performance analysed in 48 of its programme schools showed a decline by 6% from 2019. Still, this is a pass rate of 80%. The quality of the passes in terms of qualification for university entrance also did not drop against 2019's results, remaining consistent at 40%. 16 Apr 2021 Read more
