Snr Lecturer - Screen Writing

Afda is inviting applications for the position of a senior lecturer in screenwriting.

Afda is seeking a committed and dedicated senior lecturer with industry experience in creative writing (short story, promotional writing, screenwriting, and playwriting) to lecture and provide support to the BCW undergraduate students. The position requires someone with drive and initiative who can motivate students and guide them into the world of creative writing. The candidate needs to demonstrate a willingness to embrace Afda’s unique pedagogy, which forms the basis of interdisciplinary teaching at Afda. There is also a strong emphasis on cultural relevance within the teaching, aiming to help students identify and develop a distinctive African voice in their projects, contributing to nation-building and nurturing sustainable local storytellers.

Roles and responsibilities:
  • Acquire and maintain an up-to-date understanding of the BCW/BA/BCom programs, participating in onboarding processes and staff training sessions.
  • Develop an advanced understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of creative writing disciplines.
  • Conduct research to develop up-to-date lesson plans and lecture content.
  • Deliver lectures according to timetabled sessions and provide consultations.
  • Liaise with industry professionals as needed.
  • Ensure students understand assignments, assessments, and deadlines, guiding them through the term's deliverables.
  • Participate in quality assurance and enhancement practices.
  • Attend required marketing activities, consultations, and festivals.
  • Mentor and supervise students in their writing processes, ensuring project readiness for Afda festivals.
  • Host table readings and workshops to provide critical feedback to students.

  • Manage inventory of facilities and equipment.

Selection criteria:
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the film and entertainment industry.
  • Established work experience in tertiary education.
  • Minimum qualification: BA honors in creative writing, English, or equivalent field, preferably a master’s degree.
  • Experience in tertiary education or training and development is beneficial.
  • Preference given to suitably qualified candidates from designated groups in accordance with the Employment Equity Act.
