Kusasalethu mine to re-open

Shares in Harmony Gold Mining bounced off their multi-year lows on Monday (4 February) after the gold producer indicated that production at its Kusasalethu mine would resume in about six weeks time.

Harmony suspended its mining operations at Kusasalethu following a series of illegal underground sit-ins prior to the festive season break last year.

Bilateral discussions with unions - along with a Section 189 ruling‚ which gives mineworkers 60-days in which to enter into an agreement - were progressing well‚ said chief executive Graham Briggs.

The company reported a 28% increase in headline earnings per share to 158 cents in the quarter ended December despite a 9% decline in gold production due to unprotected strikes and labour disruptions at Kusasalethu.
