Kia supplements the Sonet range with an LX version. Stellar price without compromising features, quality

The Kia Sonet was introduced to South Africa in May 2021 and judging from the sales figures, it was well-received. The Sonet is manufactured to the highest quality standards at Kia's state-of-the-art production facility at Anantapur, India and is Kia's all-new smart urban compact SUV, marking the brand's entry into the burgeoning B-SUV segment in South Africa. So if you are an SUV fan and in the market for a practical sports utility vehicle, then the Kia Sonet and now the LX has to be on your shopping list. Kia has produced an affordable SUV that is sporty, eye-catching and light on fuel. (I obtained 6.4l per 100kms and this was both urban and freeway driving).

I recently tested the Sonet LX. A few features really stood out namely the overall design, the neat and uncluttered interior, easy to read instrumentation panel, the ease of changing gears and to stay connected via Android Auto. In essence, the Sonet LX ticked all the boxes. Says Gary Scott, CEO, Kia South Africa.

“The Sonet fulfils an important role in Kia’s local line-up, and is well-positioned to attract a large number of customers who value design, comfort and quality.”

Popular

To be precise, the Sonet range was introduced here in May 2021 and has cemented its position as one of South Africa’s most popular compact SUVs.

Raking in praise from buyers and admirers, thanks to its eye-catching design, fun-to-drive dynamics, spacious interior and generous standard-features tally, the popular mid-specification Sonet EX models are complemented by two entry-level Sonet LX derivatives that place value for money front and centre.

The luxury of choice

Don’t let the entry-level positioning fool you, though. The Sonet LX models do not compromise on quality or essential comfort and safety features and, like its EX sibling, are offered with Kia’s advanced, punchy and frugal 1.5 MPI naturally aspirated petrol engine delivering 85kW at 6,300r/min and 144Nm of torque at 4,500 r/min. Customers have a choice between a six-speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Feature highlights on the entry-level LX derivatives, to name but a few, include:

  • 8,0-inch HD touchscreen infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and
  • Android Auto
  • Remote central locking
  • Air-conditioning
  • Bluetooth
  • Front and rear electric windows
  • Electric mirrors
  • Six speakers
  • 15-inch steel wheels
  • Height-adjustable driver’s seat
  • Automatic headlamp activation
  • Rear-view camera
  • Combination artificial leather and cloth seat trim

Safety a priority

Customer safety is an utmost priority for Kia globally, starting with the structural integrity of the passenger cell. More than two-thirds of the Sonet’s body is made up of high-strength and advanced high-strength steel, creating a lightweight yet robust structure.

Complementing this strong structure are several key safety features, including Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hill-start Assist Control (Hac), Dual front airbags and Isofix child-seat anchoring points

Something for everyone

“The popularity of the Kia Sonet has been overwhelming, and we’re delighted that so many customers are choosing Kia’s newest model to begin their SUV life,” comments Stephen Crosse, sales and marketing director of Kia South Africa.

“There is nothing ‘entry-level’ about the Sonet LX derivatives when it comes to comfort, convenience and features, and we’re confident that the LX’s value proposition will further bolster the Sonet’s popularity.” And I can only agree. All the boxes ticked and at a very affordable price, highlighted below.
