Call for book donations to Alphabet Soup Madiba Annual Book Drive

To celebrate Mandela's life, Alphabet Soup will be doing its annual Mandela Day Book Drive, which it has done for over four years. Each year, Alphabet Soup selects charities where it knows that the books end up in the hands of those that need it most.

The 2015 annual event collected 3,500 books and, after weeks of sorting, was distributed to the following charities.

  • Seeds of Africa - this NGO is about community upliftment and is focused on enterprise development and early childhood development in previously disadvantaged communities in South Africa. This year, the donations will be helping them in building their library.

  • Touch Africa - its core focus is on the young previously disadvantaged learner and the charities strategy is to migrate

One can only achieve this if we ‘make school a better place’, be it by improving sanitation, upgrading school kitchens and building classrooms, libraries and science laboratories. Alphabet Soup assisted in the donation of books to Touch Africa’s Libraries, which are constructed out of refurbished shipping containers and are fitted with air conditioning, wooden laminated floors, beautiful shelving, a blackboard, tables and chairs, as well as +2,500 books.

  • Deloitte - the Deloitte network is committed to driving societal change. Working in innovative ways with government, non-profit organisations and civil society, it is designing and delivering solutions that contribute to a sustainable and prosperous future for all. The books donated by Alphabet Soup aid Deloitte in its efforts to bring rural communities the books they need to uplift the community.

Drop off books now

This year, Alphabet Soup is getting a head start on its book collecting. It will be collecting mainly crèche and children books this year, but textbooks, autobiographies, fiction, non-fiction, history books, educational books, coffee table books and any books that you may have which you are no longer using are welcome.

Books can be dropped off at the company’s offices, 85 6th Street Parkhurst, Johannesburg, where students, who need to do their community service, will sort the books. For more information, call +27 (0)11 880 8655.
