Cider maket now five times bigger

The fast-growing SA cider market is now around five times bigger than the cider markets in other traditionally beer-drinking countries, a recent report by UK liquor group C&C Group says.

C&C, which holds cider brands like Bulmers and Magners, estimates the annual SA cider market at 2,143m hectolitres. The US and Australia both have markets of 400000hl a year.

The SA cider market is dominated by Distell, which owns the market-leading apple cider brands Hunter's and Savanna. SABMiller owns Redd's, which is an appleflavoured cider derivative.

C&C forecasts that global cider volumes will grow from just over 17mhl in 2012 to almost 19mhl in 2014. In SA, cider volumes (which have grown at over 30% over the past five years) have outpaced the growth in categories like vodka and ready-to-drinks.
