Deadline looms for Pica Awards

It's time once again to celebrate the excellence of South African publishing: submission deadline for the 2006 Magazine Publishers Association of South Africa Sappi Pica Awards is Friday, 28 July 2006. For the first time this year, the Awards will recognise the conceptual drive, marketing insight and sheer stamina needed for launching or re-launching a title into a competitive marketplace.

Customer, business-to-business and consumer titles will be judged by industry experts and industry practitioners in each sector. The Philip Tyler Award for the Best New Launch seeks to acknowledge the most successful magazine launch of the year. New magazines, new brand extensions and re-launches all qualify as entrants. Judges will reward dramatic changes in focus, content and design.

This year's theme celebrates the diversity of the South African magazine reader. Explains Sandy Goulding, manager of Magazine Publishers Association of South Africa (MPASA), "Our aim is to acknowledge the wide readerships magazines enjoy: 46 million different personalities. We acknowledge the changing face of our 2006 readership, countrywide. We reflect the transformation drive of our industry in the Afro-chic of both our Awards documentation and the actual awards ceremony. This is the flowering of the African spirit in publishing. Be part of this innovation."

For winning titles, their accolade is the coveted Pica Award, presented at this year's gala ceremony at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg, on 2 November 2006.

Entry forms are downloadable from www.pica.org.za. Further details are available in the printed entry kit or MPASA office at +27 (0)11 721 3200.
