InterContinental opens Rosebank Holiday Inn

InterContinental Hotels Group last week opened its seventh hotel in South Africa with the launch of the 158-room Rosebank Holiday Inn.

The new hotel is well placed — opposite the new Gautrain Station — and it is linked to the Zone shopping centre expansion that is under way.

The Rosebank hotel is just one of 900 Holiday Inns that are under construction around the world and it meets the new brand standards set down by Holiday Inn's US$1bn refurbishment programme.

“The refurbishment programme is the biggest of its kind in the world and involves the refurbishing of 3200 properties around the world.

“The South African properties were among the first to meet the new standards and were built with the standards in mind,” said Phil Kasselis, InterContinental's vice president of development in the Middle East and Africa, last week. The programme is expected to be complete by the end of the year.

Kasselis said SA and Africa were key markets for InterContinental, and the group would continue to seek new opportunities on the continent, including bringing Indigo, its lifestyle brand, to SA.

“We are looking at potential sites for Indigo in Cape Town and Johannesburg, as well as new locations in Cape Town for InterContinental and Crowne Plaza. For the Holiday Inn Express brand, we believe there are opportunities in SA's secondary cities such as Rustenberg.”

The Holiday Inn Rosebank was developed with ISO Leisure, which in the past two years opened several Holiday Express hotels in Cape Town Johannesburg and Pretoria.
