East London hails low-cost carrier

The maiden FlySafair flight to East London was welcomed with a traditional water cannon salute courtesy of two fire engines after it touched down smoothly in a gusting 35km-hour South-Wester at the East London airport yesterday afternoon.

The arrival of the low-cost carrier FlySafair service, which will service the Cape Town and Johannesburg routes, has been hailed as an economic boost for the city. "We have been waiting 20 years for this" Border-Kei Chamber of Business executive director Les Holbrook said.

Airport manager Michael Kernekamp welcomed the carrier, saying it would bring relief to consumers as well as growth to the airport.

Speaking at the media launch yesterday, FlySafair's vice-president of compliance Dumisani Mthombeni said: "People voted for us to come here and showed a very big demand for flights between East London and Cape Town. We are here to stay."
