Bizcommunity embraces Mandela Day

In the spirit of Mandela Day, Bizcommunity staff members volunteered to spend time with learners at Manenberg Primary School in Cape Town. The volunteers interacted and read to 70 learners between Grades R-1. The school is part of the Western Cape Education Department's literacy programme and is an ongoing project in underprivileged communities. In the wise words of the late Nelson Mandela, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

Vicky Davis, learning support advisor for Circuit 10 at WCED: Metro Central Education District, together with Ms. Meeran, principal at Manenberg Primary and a team of learning support teachers, have joined forces in an effort to provide much-needed support for the learners.

"Traditionally, the learning support teachers have worked with small groups of learners who are withdrawn from their classrooms for the additional support. However, we have found that there is a tremendous need for support and are currently looking into ways of extending the network of support we are able to offer our learners with the goal of ultimately reaching more learners on a more individualised basis," says Davis.
