Pretoria HOMEMAKERS Expo offers Green Schools project initiative

The Pretoria HOMEMAKERS Expo, which takes place from 4 to 7 June 2009 at the Tshwane Events Centre, offers schools the opportunity to participate in the brand new HOMEMAKERS Green Schools project. This is an exciting new initiative aimed at primary and high schools in the Pretoria region with its main focus on protecting the environment.

The competition theme is ‘Going Green' and learners need to interpret this theme by researching and creating projects, using elements according to their specific category brief. There are five different categories, which include Grade 1 to 3, Grade 4 to 7, Grade 8 and 9, Grade 10 to 12, as well as the open category (open to all grades). Each category has a different element such as paper, trash, energy efficiency, ecological footprint and trendy trash.

Participating schools will be responsible for the first round of judging as they need to judge their learners' projects according to the set category criteria. The three semi-finalists then go through to the second round of the competition and their projects will be showcased at the 2009 Pretoria HOMEMAKERS Expo. A panel of independent judges will choose the top three entrants of each category and the award ceremony will take place on Saturday, 6 June 2009 at the show.

Each participating school will receive a cash donation of R1 000 to utilise as they see fit and both the winning learners and schools will win fantastic cash prizes ranging between R1 000 and R5 000 each. Visitors to the Expo will also get the opportunity to vote for their favourite projects and the learner with the most votes will win a Merit Prize of R3 000 and the school R10 000.

Says Johann Axsel, Pretoria Branch Manager: “The beauty of this project is that learners benefit by learning more about going green and in the process stand the chance of winning their share of R100 000 in prize money for themselves and their school. Schools can enter the Green Schools project by simply completing the registration form that is available online at HOMEMAKERSonline.

“We're also greening the venue and PETco will be handling our waste management at the show (www.petco.co.za). Indalo Yethu is also on board and has endorsed the Green Schools project (www.indaloyethu.co.za).”

Over 300 exhibitors will showcase a wide variety of home enhancement products and services at the Pretoria HOMEKERS Expo. Products will range from modern bathroom fittings and appliances for the kitchen to must-have furnishings and the latest in outdoor entertainment.

Make a difference to our earth and take part in the Green Schools project presented by HOMEMAKERS. Dream it, do it!
