PEP opened the doors of its first store in September 1965 in De Aar, in the Northern Cape. Founder Renier van Rooyen had a vision to create a clothing business selling clothes inexpensively as a means of upholding the dignity and respect of those less fortunate. From these humble beginnings PEP continued to grow over the years and today PEP is the largest single brand retailer in Africa with a PEP in virtually every town in South Africa. PEP operates 2,350+ stores across clothing & footwear, homeware and cellular and has been proudly making a difference in customers' lives for over 55 years.
PEP makes it possible for everyone to look and feel good. In addition to clothing and footwear, PEP offers homeware, FMCG, cellular and airtime products and value-added services, including: cash-backs, loans, funeral cover, money transfers, bill payments, flash tokens and PAXI - a courier service. PEP aims to be the friendliest and most trusted retailer and is passionate about bringing their customers the lowest prices every day on everything they need and want.
At PEP, employees are known as Dynamos because they are generators of energy that see the company as their own and add value. There is a mutual understanding that it's impossible to grow and prosper in the way that PEP does without the support and commitment of their Dynamos. PEP employs over 17,000 Dynamos who are famous for greeting each other with a high five. This is no accident - it stems from PEP's culture which is one of the most inspiring and endearing company cultures in the world. Sikhula KunYe, a Xhosa phrase that means "we grow together", creates a unique environment of teamwork which fosters both business and personal growth. This unique culture guides how they do business, how they treat each other and how they behave.
