Job description

Ninety9cents is a full service, integrated advertising agency located in Cape Town, and is one of South Africa¹s largest independently-owned agencies. Led by founder and Managing Director Andrew Brand, the agency¹s extensive client base includes leading brands such as Shoprite/Checkers, Ackermans, PUMA and the Spur Group, to name but a few. 

We are seeking talented and experienced retail copywriters to join our growing Creative Team. Applicants must demonstrate creative insight and brilliance for client solutions across all media platforms. 
We are looking for strategic thinkers who can brainstorm ideas, develop concepts, and produce thoughtful, irresistible messaging for digital and print media. Reporting to the Creative Director, the successful candidates must be gifted, detail-obsessed big thinkers and a passionate and hard-working, self-motivated team players with the ability to grasp a client's strategy and brand, and deliver beautiful; insightful and polished work. Examples of creative work must be supplied with applications. 

Experience, skills and qualities required:
  • Must be highly creative and imaginative
  • Must be skilled in writing clear, concise and grammatically correct copy
  • Must have the ability to understand the different language styles that appeal to various target markets
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Works well in a team and with a range of creative people
  • Must be able to work consistently under pressure and manage workloads effectively
  • Must be highly self-motivated and well-organised
  • Must have the ability to see other people’s points-of-view and take onboard feedback
  • Must be able to work within strict budgets
  • Must have an eye for detail
  • Strong in both concept generation and copywriting – looking for the talent we can grow.
Responsibilities include:
  • Translating the brief and the strategic requirements into a compelling creative solution
  • Presentation of work to the Creative Group Head and/or Creative Director
  • Together with an Art Director, generate effective; innovative and compelling creative concepts for individual ads or campaigns based on sound strategies
  • Proactively identify creative trends and opportunities
  • Direct and produce effective, impactful and compelling advertising that reflects insight into the task, the brand and the target market
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding and appreciation of South Africa’s diverse demographic and cultures
  • Write copy and scripts for electronic/digital media
  • Direct radio towards a high quality final product
  • Backup proofreading of copy
  • Take ownership of tasks and actively manage the creative process to progress towards deadline


    • Degree/Diploma in copywriting
    • Two to three years’ advertising agency experience
    • Experience working with retail clients essentail
    • Conceptual and exceptional advertising ability 
    • A portfolio that reflects creative copywriting proficiencies
    • Flair for writing imaginative, broad, disruptive, creative and original work
    • Understanding of advertising as a selling tool  
    • Capability to take on campaigns with multi-element tasks which require a concept and a thought-through process
    • Accept guidance and respond well to criticism 
    • Resilient – can accept setbacks 
    • Finely-honed copywriting skills and latest techniques
    • Have a great sense of humour
