The register is expected to list the names and contact details of all pregnant women in South Africa.

Health spokesperson Joe Maila said the register would assist the department in dealing with infant mortality in the country.

"We want to make sure that all pregnant women in the country are on our database so that we are able to give them the necessary advice and support they need," said Maila, speaking to the GCIS Radio Bulletin on Tuesday (8 April).

He said by registering, pregnant mothers would receive notifications of when they needed to report for a check-up.

It was important for pregnant women to visit ante-natal clinics throughout their pregnancy so that if complications are picked up they can be dealt with immediately. Many pregnant women arrive at hospital for the first time when they are already in labour.

"This project will assist us a great deal," said Maila.

He added that the launch of the register would be done in partnership with the people in order to ensure its effectiveness.
