Listed under the Innovators category, Vally features Kizzmekia Corbett, the scientific lead of the Vaccine Research Center’s coronavirus team at the US National Institutes of Health; and Sarah Al Amiri, the UAE’s minister for advanced sciences and the lead scientist on the project that recently sent the Hope spacecraft into orbit around Mars.

Counterspace was founded by Sumayya Vally, Sarah de Villiers and Amina Kaskar in 2015. Inspired by its location, it is committed to developing design expression particularly for Africa – through design research, publishing, pedagogy, built things, buildings and other forms of architecture.

The studio's philosophy is dedicated to finding expression for hybrid identities and contested territories.
