Toyota South Africa added the pre-2010 versions of the RAV4 sports utility vehicle to the list of locally-sold vehicles with potential design faults.

Also at risk are Yaris small cars built between 2004 and 2010‚ and 2005 and 2010 models of Hilux‚ Fortuner and Innova. Yaris and RAV4 are imported into South Africa‚ while the others are built in Durban as part of Toyota's Innovative Multipurpose Vehicle (IMV) range.

Toyota SA spokesman Leo Kok said Yaris and RAV4 vehicles contained potentially faulty rails used to adjust the position of front seats. If they are adjusted too often‚ the springs may weaken‚ which could cause them to snap in an accident.

On Hilux‚ Fortuner and Innova‚ Kok said the problem was a steering-wheel spiral cable that might stop the driver airbag deploying in an accident. However‚ he said the problem would be identified by a dashboard warning light.
