3 Continents Film Festival

In September South Africa will host the 3 Continents Film Festival - a showcase for outstanding documentaries out of Latin America, Africa and Asia that explore compelling issues around human rights.

An initiative of Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR), Southern African Communications for Development (SACOD) and Uhuru Productions, the 3 Continents Film Festival will build upon the successful 1st Annual 3 Continents Film Festival held last September in Buenos Aires, Argentina hosted by the Latin American Movimento dos Documentalistas, and will strengthen ties between filmmakers, producers and distributors from the countries of the south, while developing a film audience from these regions. The festival embarks from the premise that film and video serve a vital role in insuring and restoring historical memory around struggles, oppression and denial of basic freedoms and inalienable rights.

The 3 Continents Film Festival showcases films dealing with a range of themes including: transitional justice, reconciliation, racism, women's empowerment, HIV/AIDS, socio-economic rights, xenophobia, migration and communal divisions. A number of visiting filmmakers will be in attendance during the festival and will be available for Q&A sessions after screenings.

Besides the 20 days of screenings in Johannesburg and Cape Town, the 3 Continents Film Festival will embark on a wide-scale road show traveling to rural areas, townships and universities around the country. In early September, as part of a lead-in to the festival, and again during the first week of October, the festival will visit various tertiary institutions in order to expose students to a variety of cinematic expression on socially important themes from different cultural contexts.

The festival takes place from September 12 - 21 at Cinema Noveau in Rosebank, Johannesburg, and from September 19 - 28 at Cinema Noveau at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.
