MMA launches campaign to celebrate SA constitution

An initiative of Media Monitoring Africa, "We The People" is focused on educating South Africans about the constitution, in ways that ordinary people can relate to. It aims to have one million South Africans tell the world why they love their constitution.

The site opened on 10 February 2012, to celebrate 15 years of the constitution and, until 29 February, MMA is encouraging everyone to remind the world of what makes South Africans unique and relive some of the spirit of 2010.

Described as a world first, the celebration realises that many have only a vague idea of what is written in it. They forget that the constitution is the bedrock of the country's democracy, the document that defines who we are as South Africans. It is widely considered the most advanced constitution of any country in the world.

Knowing that the ideals enshrined in the constitution are not always reflected in the reality of people's lives, but getting them to understand what their rights are is the first step towards standing up for them.
