Morgenster Estate voted best extra virgin olive oil producer

Morgenster's Don Carlo Extra Virgin Olive Oil has been named the 2019 winner of the Best Extra Virgin Olive Oil in the Southern Hemisphere at the Olio Nuovo Days in Paris. Morgenster Estate co-owner Federica Bertrand says that the team is particularly proud of this award, as Don Carlo is a new international olive cultivar, established for the first time in South Africa at the Morgenster Estate. "Morgenster has the sole right to propagate and distribute the patented variety in South Africa, and we're delighted that it has received an international award so early on."

Olio Nuovo Days is an international event dedicated to the promotion of new and premium olive oil.

Morgenster pressed a limited quantity of extra virgin olive oil from the Don Carlo groves for the first time in 2013 and only produces the Don Carlo varietal when sufficient oil becomes available.

In the intense fruity category, Morgenster Don Carlo Extra Virgin Olive Oil is markedly different from that of more traditional olive varietals. The aroma is elegant and clean, with hints of tomato, artichoke, wild chicory, tomato leaf together with notes of mint and rosemary. Its taste is full and strong, with a spicy flavour of black pepper and a distinct note of almond.

Bitterness is definite and pungency is distinct. The single-varietal oil exhibits compelling character and invites experimentation with food pairings.

Olio Nuovo Days is a gastronomic event amongst olive oil aficionados and producers and allows for tasting and discovering olive oil varieties from different territories.
