Radio Grahamstown sacks management

The board of trustees of Radio Grahamstown has dismissed five of the station's managers because of their management 'style'.

The community radio station, popular among Makana Xhosa-speakers for its talk shows and music, struggled for years to get their operating licence.

Two years ago there were incidents of alleged misappropriation of funds, but board trustee and journalism lecturer, Jean du Toit, makes it clear that this has nothing to do with the removal of the five managers.

The management team, she says, was "dissolved" due to individuals constantly making important decisions on their own accord without consulting the rest of the team, such as changes to the programming schedule and staff dismissals.

The managers are not being accused of anything, says Du Toit, and will be allowed to re-apply for positions when a team has been set up properly.

A trustee member has been put in place as acting manager.
