Cassim had been serving as Eskom's chief financial officer and will lead the Eskom management team until further notice, Eskom said in a statement. He is a registered chartered accountant (SA) and holds a master’s degree in business leadership (MBL).

“With over 20 years of service in Eskom, his qualifications and extensive experience have provided Cassim with a deep understanding and appreciation of the Eskom business and the electricity industry, especially regarding the challenges facing the financing of operations and future expansion of the industry,” Eskom said.

On Wednesday, Eskom's board of directors asked De Ruyter to leave his position immediately after he claimed in an interview with eNCA that the governing party was corrupt. De Ruyter had been at the helm of the ailing utility since December 2019.

ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has rejected De Ruyter's corruption claims.
