A joint initiative between Steiner Hygiene, Steiner Environmental Solutions, and Kimberly-Clark Professional, Operation Deep Clean has assisted over 60 Gauteng schools to clean up their act, by rejuvenating their below-standard toilet facilities.

Selected schools had their bathrooms deep cleaned and repaired, and were provided with starter packs of cleaning chemicals, paper products and hand soap. Corporate-sponsored hygiene contracts were also put in place to ensure ongoing upkeep.

On top of these bathroom makeovers, Operation Deep Clean has undertaken a massive campaign to drive home the importance of hand-washing and personal hygiene. Using the popular HyGienie, Kim McClean, and General Pure-O characters to get the message across, the Operation Deep Clean road show educates between 15 000 and 20 000 learners each month.

With the fundamentals for good hygiene in place, Operation Deep Clean challenged participating schools to stay on the straight and narrow, fighting for a place in its hygiene competition. With substantial prizes up for grabs, schools had to maintain their toilet facilities, keeping them clean, hygienic and undamaged.

At a prize giving ceremony held at the end of October, Operation Deep Clean presented H.A. Jack Primary in Highlands North with the top honours. “The children loved the interactive teaching approach Operation Deep Clean took and immediately took ownership of improving their bathrooms,” said Acting Principal Rosemary Maluleke. “Regular follow up visits from the Operation Deep Clean team ensured that the project never lost momentum.”

The school wins R30 000 worth of bathroom improvements, a mural, and a year's worth of toilet paper, soap and paper towels, sponsored by Steiner Hygiene and Kimberly-Clark Professional.

Second place was awarded to Moshoeshoe Primary School in Daveyton, and third to Esithebeni Primary School in Mofolo North, Soweto.

A further seven primary schools were congratulated on being amongst the Top 10 cleanest in Gauteng. They were Bafo Chiko, Bree, Eastgate, Gazankulu, Liberty Community, Midrand and Norwood Primary Schools. They each won a hamper of cleaning supplies for their bathrooms.

Operation Deep Clean's Norman Smith, Managing Director of Steiner Hygiene Group, thanked the schools for pulling together and making Gauteng's school bathrooms cleaner and more hygienic. “Everyone has the right to use a clean toilet, so let's continue making an effort,” he said.
