MTN is pleased to announce that it has been testing, demonstrating and evaluating Edge and 3G technologies on a live pilot network since May 2004, with applications such as streaming video, Internet access and gaming.

Additionally, MTN has been rolling out Edge capable equipment. MTN's testing of wireless broadband includes user experience, technical viability and commercial viability in the South African market.

It can also be announced that Icasa has granted MTN a provisional 3G (wideband CDMA) licence. MTN has tested its innovative 3G capabilities including video calls between Cape Town and Johannesburg and looks forward to the super-speed and super connectivity possibilities of the broadband generation.

MTN plans to host a launch on 23 June to demonstrate the 3G experience, highlighting how close the next generation really is. The potential of thrilling new broadband technologies and their capabilities will be showcased.

MTN will explore the full capabilities of 3G as soon as Icasa issues the formal licence to do so.
