SA film industry shines at Golden Globes

It was a good year for Ster-Kinekor Distribution at this year's Golden Globes Awards in Los Angeles, with Brokeback Mountain, Capote, The Constant Gardener and Memoirs of a Geisha walking away with Golden Globes.

Tsotsi, Gavin Hood's drama about six days in the violent life of a young Johannesburg gangster, became the first ever local feature film to be nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Out of a total of 60 films eligible for the award, Tsotsi made it into the top five.

Miramax is releasing Tsotsi in the US at the end of February and will be screened locally from 3 February 2006.

It was also the second time that Charlize Theron flew the South African flag for the country with her nomination in the Best Actress category for her role in the film North Country.

Brokeback Mountain, which releases on 10 March, won best motion picture (drama), best director for a motion picture and best original song for a motion picture.

Constant Gardener won best performance by an actress in a supporting role (Rachel Weisz) and is currently on circuit.

Capote won best performance by an actor in a motion picture (Philip Seymour Hoffman)

Memoirs of a Geisha won best original score and releases on 5 May 2006.
