Call to enter media awards for sports, law

Two media awards have opened for entries - the new-look SAB Sports Media Awards 2011 and the Webber Wentzel Legal Journalist of the Year Award. The sports media awards close for entries on Friday, 16 September 2011, with a gala dinner on 10 November, and the legal journo awards close on Wednesday 12 October, with a winners' lunch on Wednesday 9 November.

The South African Breweries awards, previously known as the 'SAB Sports Journalist of the Year Awards', have evolved not only to remain relevant in a rapidly changing media environment, but to also reflect best global business practice

Robyn Chalmers, head of media and communications for SAB says, "Although the role of the sports journalist has remained the same over the years, the way they communicate and the platforms that they now use need to be acknowledged."

In addition to the new name, the entry criteria has been simplified, the judging process made more transparent and the categories have also been updated. Competition entrants can either self-nominate, or be nominated by their respective media houses, in any of the following categories:

Promoting justice

The Webber Wentzel awards recognise outstanding work in the field of legal journalism to acknowledge the role played by journalists in promoting knowledge of the judiciary and understanding of the country's civil and criminal justice systems. The awards are open to any journalist reporting on legal issues in the print or electronic media in South Africa.

Categories, prizes

Print Media (including online publication) - R50 000
Radio - R50 000
Television - R50 000

No runner-up prizes will be awarded.

Judges

This year's judges are John Campbell, a practising advocate and Franz Krüger adjunct professor and director of the Wits Radio Academy. They will assess the quality of reporting that demonstrates the ability to understand, interpret and provide in-depth analysis or comment on legal issues and developments that impact on society and people's lives.

Entrants should submit no more than four articles published between 1 September 2010 and 31 August 2011 in the print category and no more than four DVDs, CDs, video clips or cassette recordings of broadcasts (TV or Radio) made between 1 September 2010 and 31 August 2011.
