New Android app for SA's schools

Local company Future Mobile Technology (FMT) has developed an Android application, Netsurfer Scholar that will give users online access to material they need for school.

The app, to be launched in February, can come pre-installed on tablets made by FMT, which says it is the only SA tablet manufacturer.

The app will allow access to the TouchTutor content package, created by the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, which provides supportive material including videos and experiments for mathematics and science pupils in grades 10, 11 and 12.

Tracy Andersson, joint chief executive of FMT, said the service includes a seven-day-a-week call centre.

"As far as I'm aware we're the only brand with this service," she said.

Andersson said the app's video-based material and simple interface makes it easy to use, even for those without computer skills. The company plans to launch its devices in the the rest of sub-Saharan Africa, and in Britain, by the end of 2013.

The company's bestseller is the 3G-embedded Netsurfer Touch tablet, sold in Pep and Ackermans stores. FMT has manufactured more than 10,000 of the units. The company assembles its tablets in China, but is training local staff with a view to manufacturing it in South Africa.
