2011 CIT:Y awards bursary winners chosen

The winners of the R200 000 bursaries for this year's CIT:Y awards for students studying towards careers in the creative industries were awarded on Wednesday 24 August 2011 at Museum Africa in Johannesburg.

"The standard of entries was extremely high this year and the judges remarked on the fact that there were several works of exceptional quality. It's exciting to know that these young dynamos will soon be enriching the city's and the country's arts, culture and creative industries with their creations," said Alba Letts, on behalf of the City of Joburg's Community Development: Arts, Culture and Heritage Directorate.

Winners

  • Animation:

    • Joint bursary winners: Eric Barnfather (3rd year, AFDA) and Thapelo Keetile (4th year, University of Johannesburg)
    • Second place: Nadine Botha (3rd year, AFDA)
    • Third place: Matthew Levings (3rd year, University of the Witwatersrand)

  • Broadcast:

    • Joint bursary winners: Nonjabulo Zwane and Johannah Legodi (1st year, NEMISA) - Joint submission
    • Second place: Tania Moleko (1st year, NEMISA)
    • Third place: Phumile Skosana (1st year, NEMISA)

  • Dance (Arts Alive bursary):

    • Winner: Maleshwane Mohoasi (1st year, Vuyani Dance Theatre)
    • Second place: Charity Sehlapelo (1st year, Moving into Dance Mophatong)
    • Joint third place: Nhlanhla Ndzimande (1st year, Moving into Dance Mophatong) and Thuso Lobeko (1st year, Moving into Dance Mophatong)

  • Graphic design:

  • Photography:

    • Winner: Matthew Kay (intermediate course, Market Photo Workshop)

    • Third place: Hemisha Bhana (3rd year, University of the Witwatersrand)

  • Textile design:

    • Winner: Christopher Mdlane (4th year incubator, Imbali Visual Literacy Project)
    • Second place: Masetho Mohohlo (4th year incubator, Imbali Visual Literacy Project)
    • Joint third place: Daniel Mwale (3rd year, Imbali Visual Literacy Project) and Thato Sekhoto (4th year incubator, Imbali Visual Literacy Project)

  • Visual arts:

    • Winner: Phumulani Ntuli (4th year, University of Johannesburg)
    • Second place: Errol Manota (2nd year, Artist Proof Studio)

    • Joint third place: Minenkhulu Ngoyi (3rd year, Artist Proof Studio) and Motlatjo Mabeba (3rd year, University of the Witwatersrand)

  • Best newcomer bursary: Wandile Motha (foundation course, graphic design - Greenside Design Centre)
  • Career bursary: Thabiso Sekgala (fellowship student, photography - Market Photo Workshop)

The runners-up received a package of complimentary tickets valued at approximately R2000, to see the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra at the Linder Auditorium, the South African Tattoo at Montecasino, Moving into Dance Mophatong's production of 'Hotel', by Mark Hawkins at the Market Theatre, and selected shows at the Joburg Theatre during the City of Joburg's Arts Alive International Festival in September.
