FM think tank opens with Death founder

Financial Mail is launching a business think tank, the FM Fresh Thinking Series, which will provide entrepreneurs in the country with a platform to develop fresh ideas and forward thinking business. It will provide businesses with global trends and be addressed by some of the most innovative and pioneering individuals in the business world.

The breakfast launch on 26 November 2009 at the Il Grande Theatre in Montecasino, Johannesburg, will host as its first speaker, internationally renowned entrepreneur BJ Cunningham, author of Corporate Religion and founder of Death cigarettes.

BJ has incredible stories to tell about how to take on market leaders and also about the type of fresh thinking you need to survive in tough times when the competition is broader. In the 1990s, he established and marketed Death as "an honest smoke" giving his Enlightened Tobacco Company such a foothold that it took on the might of the tobacco industry.

He uses the Death brand as a case study to illustrate the power of provocation and how to turn a conservative market. His presentation will focus on why companies are like people. To flourish in any market, companies like individuals, should understand:

  • How they perceive themselves;
  • How others perceive them;
  • How they want to be perceived.

Tickets are available at Computicket at R495 per ticket. Each ticket entitles the attendant to a six-month subscription to FM or a six month renewal for current FM subscribers.
