Twitter looking to extend 140 character limit
The report was announced on Re/Code and says that the limit will be the same of Direct Messages, so it seems as though Twitter were testing the waters with this product. They are reportedly looking at a launch date some time towards the end of Q1, according to the article.
Twitter has seen a decrease in their user base, and have struggled to gain new users to the platform. With the shine on Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram last year, Twitter is trying to fight its way out from the shadows of these social networks. Changing one of their main features is definitely something that is meant to lure in new users, who may have found the 140 characters too limiting.
Design is going to be the main component in the change, as having a 10,000 character tweet seems rather tedious and would make users' timelines way too long. Another aspect for concern are the elusive spammers... where they could mention an excessive amount of accounts to target, also making the whole social experience a little overwhelming.
