Lions do Titans a favour

The bizhub Highveld Lions did the log leading Nashua Titans a big favour in the eighth round of SuperSport Series matches that finished on Sunday when they beat the second placed Gestetner Diamond Eagles by nine runs at the Liberty Life Wanderers Stadium.

With the other matches petering out into high scoring draws, it meant that the Titans maintained their lead at the top of the log at 7.82 points.

The Titans and the Diamond Eagles go head to head in the ninth round at Bloemfontein's OUTsurance Oval in 11 days' time which may decide the domestic first-class title.

Craig Alexander proved to be the hero for the Lions as he dismissed four of the Diamond Eagles' top six batsmen at minimal cost including visiting captain Boeta Dippenaar who was last man out after batting for nearly four hours.

Neither side managed to put 200 runs on the board at any stage of the match.

Down the road at SuperSport Park, Heino Kuhn took his marathon innings to nine hours and 10 minutes in compiling the second double century of the match (203 runs, 395 balls, 25 fours and two sixes).

The only point of tactical interest was as to which side would prevail on the first innings and in the end the Chevrolet Warriors edged out the home side.

In the remaining time left Ashwell Prince took his match aggregate to almost 300 runs as the Warriors lost three wickets to Albie Morkel and Paul Harris.

Runs also flowed at the Maritzburg Oval where the Nashua Cape Cobras had little difficulty in batting out the last day against the Nashua Dolphins after trailing by 85 runs on the first innings.

Alastair Gray and Stiaan van Zyl both scored centuries as the Cobras coasted past the 300 run mark before the match was abandoned.

The Dolphins did just enough in the match to push the Cobras down to bottom spot on the log.

The Lions have also gone past the Warriors into third position.

Log positions: Nashua Titans 95.9, Gestetner Diamond Eagles 88.08, bizhub Highveld Lions 66.42, Chevrolet Warriors 60.5, Nashua Dolphins 48.88, Nashua Cape Cobras 47.4
