Smart casting, brilliant character direction, solid performances and a simple yet highly appealing storyline - Wimpy's new television commercial for the Big W Breakfast packs as much into 30 seconds as the fast-service family restaurant chain delivers at breakfast time.
Created by the FCB Joburg team of Executive Creative Director Jonathan Deeb, Creative Director Suhana Gordhan, Copywriter Khanyi Mphumlwana and Art Director Nobantu Sibeko in response to a brief to build Wimpy’s breakfast credentials in a memorable way, the TVC was shot by Egg Films’ Dani Hynes.
It focusses on a brief – yet engaging – interaction between a Wimpy patron and a Wimpy waitress that is sure to put a smile on every viewer’s lips.
“This ad is quite honestly an inspired response to a fairly common request made by many marketing teams everyday: build my brand’s credentials in a manner that ensures it is top of mind. In Wimpy’s case we want to ensure that we're the consumers’ first choice when it comes to breakfast,” said Marketing Manager, Luise Peters.
“Cue Mandla, a somewhat clumsy, sweet guy who is smitten with the waitress serving him his meal. He attempts to flirt using the only thing they have in common at that moment, his breakfast, but he strikes out, not once, but twice.
“Fortunately for him, at Wimpy, it’s always a feel good morning when you start your day with the Wimpy Big W Breakfast. And he knows it,” she said.
