EOH and Rockefeller Foundation accelerate ICT job growth

Job creation in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector will get a $1m boost from the Rockefeller Foundation to support information technology skills among disadvantaged youth in South Africa.

The grant will be used to support EOH's Youth Job Creation Initiative that aims to stimulate job creation through strengthening interaction between youth‚ business and government by facilitating internship training programmes.

The grant forms part of the foundation's Digital Jobs Africa initiative which hopes to empower one million people within six African countries with skills to sustain the information and communications technology sectors and enable greater employment opportunities.

Other countries to benefit from similar initiatives are Ghana‚ Kenya‚ Morocco‚ Egypt and Nigeria.

Mamadou Biteye‚ Managing Director of Rockefeller Foundation Africa's regional office says with digital skills becoming a requirement for well-paid jobs‚ the foundation supports EOH in facilitating access to such opportunities.

"A young person with one year's work experience has an 80% chance of remaining in the formal working sector for the remainder of their career. It's not only good for business‚ but good for society‚" said EOH's Chief Executive Asher Bohbot.
