Encounters 2018 to support South Africa's rising young talent

Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau will host the 2018 edition of the annual creative documentary film festival, Encounters. A selection of 37 local and international features and short films will be screened at the Cinema Nouveau Rosebank Mall in Johannesburg and the Cinema Nouveau V&A Waterfront in Cape Town from 31 May-10 June 2018.

This year, Ster-Kinekor is also sponsoring the inaugural EYE (Encounters Youth Experience) Award. This award will be judged by a Cape Town-based panel of three young industry jurors and will be presented to the best South African short documentary screened during the festival.

Encounters 2018 to support South Africa's rising young talent

“As the country’s leading exhibitor, our involvement with Encounters and sponsoring of the second EYE Award gives us a great opportunity to entrench our commitment further to developing the local film industry, and supporting South Africa’s exciting, rising young talent,” says Motheo Matsau, chief of marketing and sales at Ster-Kinekor Theatres.

“Continued focus on the youth market at our cinemas is a key sector element of our marketing strategy. This sponsorship opportunity further strengthens that strategy, and enables us to interact with some of the country’s developing young talent within the sector, whose careers are just starting to take off.”

The Encounters Youth Jury connoisseurs comprise:

-Khanyisile Mazibuko (23), is an actress, talk-show host and filmmaking student. A National School of the Arts alumni and the director of award-winning short film Zeroni.
-Beth Ribeiro (20) is a final-year student in screen production and drama at UCT.
-Shari Mwanika (21) is an aspirant Ugandan filmmaker who storytelling is an extension of who she is and that passion has moulded her.

The festival will facilitate comprehensive screening and workshop programme aimed at bringing the South African documentary to young audiences. This initiative shows continued support to young filmmakers in this genre and to the practical craft of documentary filmmaking.
